Dr Malin Vedøy Uthaug

Speaker, writer, freediver, and one of the world’s leading experts on 5-MeO-DMT.

Biography

Dr Malin Vedøy-Uthaug is a researcher at the frontier of consciousness, human potential, and transformative experiences. She is the lead researcher for Noonautics’ Darkness Retreat Project, investigating how immersive darkness can support healing, thriving, and human optimization, while exploring the potential release of endogenous DMT and 5-MeO-DMT during these profound experiences.

As founder of Embalance AS, she conducts cutting-edge research combining neuroscience, psychophysiology, and experiential practices, translating insights into practical tools that help individuals safely navigate altered states for growth, healing, and performance. Her work spans pioneering studies on 5-MeO-DMT, breathwork, and freediving, integrating extreme human experiences with scientific research. Her explorations take her to unusual and remote environments, thriving in extreme natural conditions, experimental settings, and immersive human experiences. Driven by curiosity and a relentless pursuit of understanding, Dr Vedøy Uthaug pushes the boundaries of what is known about consciousness, resilience, and the untapped potential of the human mind, body, and spirit.

Alongside her team, she co-created bodyset, a construct describing the body’s physiological state and its role as an extension of the set and setting framework, used to prepare for psychedelic experiences and other stressors. She also co-developed Pivotal Physical States (PiPS), the somatic counterpart to pivotal mental states, highlighting how the body, like the mind, can enter highly flexible states that facilitate deep transformation.

In addition to her research, Dr Vedøy Uthaug is an adventurer, athlete, writer, consultant, and public speaker, sharing her insights on consciousness, human optimization, and altered states with international audiences.
